wellness incentive ideas

Austin, Texas:  A new study from Virgin Pulse suggests that many employers could be getting significant improvements in their wellness incentive program results.

After surveying 341 employers and nearly 4,000 employees about attitudes and actions around wellness programs, here are some of their findings:

-40% say they have no plans to beef up their wellness programs–even though the Affordable Care Act permits them to

-Nearly half of employers who offer wellness plans don’t track productivity results or test to see if employee engagement has increased as a result of wellness program participation

– 96  percent of employees participate to improve their own health, making improved health a bigger motivator than financial incentives

-52 percent of employers offered services for mental health and depression management in 2014, a significant 14 percent increase from last year.

Does Your Wellness Program Focus Enough on Positive Reinforcement?

Is Your Wellness Program More About the Stick Rather Than the Carrot? You Might be Surprised.

Wellness Program IdeasAustin, Texas:  In a Harvard Business Review study, it was shown that in high-performing teams, managers would give five positive comments for every negative comment.  By contrast, managers that gave three negative comments for every positive comment have very low performance among team members.

Makes sense–right?

But in your wellness program, what is your ratio of positive vs. negative comments?

Are you even keeping track?

Are you monitoring these comments?

Do you have a guide for what positive comments to mention or shout out?

Are your “positive” comments really positive at all in the yes of your employees?

You can have the greatest wellness program plan in history–but if positive reinforcement is not practiced — and practiced consistently and overwhelmingly – you will not get optimal results.

It is as simple as that.

Catch your employees doing things right.

Comment on it.

Reinforce those positive behaviors and your employees will keep doing more healthy behaviors because they are hungry for praise.

Now, how many positive comments do you plan to make to your employees today? Tomorrow? Next week? ext month?

Make it a habit.

Look for the positive behaviors and your wellness program stands a much greater chance of success. Ignore this advice and your results will be sub-par.

Here’s a to healthier workforce!

The Perfect Wellness Incentive Reward is Right in Front of You

finding the perfect wellness rewards or giftsDon’t Over-think Your Wellness Rewards!

Austin, Texas: I get many calls per week asking for ideas to help find the perfect gift or reward for a corporate wellness program.

So…what is the perfect wellness reward?

Well, it is simple.

The perfect wellness reward is a simple pat on the back.

That’s right!

It is a simple AND genuine pat on the back and acknowledgement from someone in management that they are doing a good job.

Preferably, this pat on the back will be made in front of a group of peers– making that recognition even more meaningful.

That’s it!

A simple  “atta boy”!

“Way to go!”

“We’re proud of you!”

“Great job!”

Don’t over-think it.

You can have the greatest wellness rewards – and if there is no acknowledgement from senior members, the program will fade fast.

Let your employees know that you are proud of their initiative on their wellness goals.

Ask them how they achieved such success- and share it with others.

Be genuine.

Be empathetic.

Keep your wellness rewards simple and your wellness program will be extremely successful.

Sponsoring a 5K or 10K Company Running Race Team is a Great Wellness & Fitness Idea

9 Tips to Consider Before Sponsoring a Company Running Race Team

tips to sponsoring a 5K or 10K run team

Everyone is a winner when you sponsor a company race team for a local 5K or 10K event- WellnessIncentivesPlus.com

Austin, Texas: While running in my second race in the past month, I was so excited to see how many organizations have been sponsoring company-wide running teams.

What a great idea to improve fitness and wellness at your company – as well as to create greater awareness of wellness issues.

Here are some proven ideas to consider when sponsoring a running race team for your company:

1) Survey Your Employees: You can probably survey your employees and see how many people are willing to run in either a 5K or 10K race (or both). You may find that you even have marathoners or triathletes among your company — which might encourage you to sponsor some of those teams, as well.

2) Spread the News: Spread the news on Facebook, on Tweets and in your newsletter – as well as through other existing channels of communication.

3) Award Participation: Award points for participation, points for completion – and points for having members of the team come out and support their fellow runners.  There is nothing better than having someone cheer you on while you are on your last legs and needing a mental and spiritual boost to keep on going.

4) Get Training: Have a local wellness coach, gym or a veteran runner come in and teach a few classes on running exercises, running tips, warm-up and post-run stretches, etc.  A little knowledge in running can improve performance and shorten their post-race stiffness and soreness.

5) Get Matching T-Shirts: Start  an in-house competition a come up with a fun name– then a team logo.  Order bold imprinted T-shirts with your company name on them (preferably with wicking properties) and have a few team meetings before the race.

6) Get C-Level Participation: Be sure to get several C-Level executives to participate in the runs–either as a runner or as a cheerleader.   This support is crucial to your race team – for this race and others down the road.

7) Have a Post-Race Party.  Celebrate success!  Encourage success! After all, everyone’s a winner if they cross the finish line–regardless of their race time.

8) Take Photos: Be sure to take a lot of pictures and post them on your company website and Facebook page.

9) Rinse & Repeat: If you continue to promote these race teams, the number of participants should keep on growing.

In addition, as runners start to see your corporate name on the T-shirts of runners in front of them, your HR team might be pleasantly surprised at the number of fitness-minded prospects apply to your company.  Fitness begets more fitness.

Show your community that you actively care about wellness and reap the benefits of happier and healthier employees.

Here’s to a healthier workforce.

5 Steps to Improve Your Wellness Incentive Reward Program

Tips to improving your wellness reward selectionsSimplicity is Key to Choosing The Right Wellness Incentive Rewards

Austin, TX: When talking with my clients, one of the biggest obstacles I hear is that a wellness reward and incentive program is often too complex to get off the ground.

Many wellness coordinators are held back — meeting after meeting — trying to come up with the perfect incentive reward or gift for their employees.

In fact, it has gotten to the point where too many are spending more time finding the right rewards compared to putting the wellness program together.

It shouldn’t be that way.

Keep your wellness incentive simple.

Here are five simple steps to help improve your wellness incentive program:

1.) Don’t Involve Too Many People in the Decision-Making Process.

If you ask 10 people what they want to include for rewards, you will get 15 responses- everything from gym memberships, pedometers, restaurant certificates, T-shirts and everything in between.

All good ideas, but you need to start somewhere.

Limit it to 3 people max so you can kick the ideas around and make a decision.

2.) There is No Perfect Gift

Stop looking for the one gift that will excite all your employees.

It just doesn’t exist– or I’d stock up our warehouses with just that one item.

Go with your gut decision and offer wellness incentive awards and prizes that you think will be appreciated by your employees.

3. ) Test, Get Feedback and Re-Test

Get feedback from your employees after the program has launched so that you can edit, tweak and make changes.

Do this a few months into the program or you will never get the program off the ground.

Momentum is crucial to getting results and you can always add incentive reward prizes to the mix.

4.) Offer a Variety of Incentive Prizes

Rule #2 states that there is no one perfect gift.

Rule #4 builds on that premise by realizing that your employees will seek to reach different levels of achievement in the wellness program.

You need to reward and motivate those employees that need more of an initial push to get started — but not forget about those that are already fit, but want to improve even further.

Point programs are ideal for this structure – as they allow people to earn better rewards for achieving better results.

5.) Half the Reward is in the Presentation

Your employees want to feel recognized.

Pats on the back work great.

Mentions in the company newsletter are also a nice touch.

When awarding the incentive gifts or prizes, be sure to hand them out at team meetings so the employees can be recognized in front of their peers.

You’d be surprised at just how valuable recognition is to the feeling of accomplishment and achievement.

Recognition, coupled with incentive rewards are the foundation to a strong wellness program.

Here’s to a healthier workforce.
