New Study Shows That Employees That Exercise Earn 9% More

employees that exercise earn 9% more than those that do not exerciseAustin, Texas: A new study published in the June issue of the Journal of Labor Research shows that workers who exercise regularly earn 9% higher pay on average than those who don’t.

According to the study, There are three potential explanations for the correlation between exercise and earnings:

  1. 1) Exercise leads to higher wages

  2. 2) Wage changes affect individuals’ level of physical activity

  3. 3) Other, unobserved factors cause differences in both exercise frequency and earnings.

The study, published in the Journal of Labor Research, suggests that regular exercise can have an impact on the productivity and well-being of an employee. “It is widely acknowledged that regular exercise has a beneficial impact on well-being. In addition to the positive impact on heart health, weight and on a variety of other medical issues, studies in the literature show that exercise leads to improved mental function, psychological condition and higher energy level, ” Kosteas notes.

He adds, “All three of these traits can be translated into higher earnings by increasing productivity. Besides the direct effect, exercise can have indirect positive impacts on labor market outcome by serving as a signal to potential employers that the individual is dedicated and disciplined.” Since the employer benefits from these attributes, Kosteas recommends that employers embrace sponsored exercise programs and gym memberships not only for the good of employees, but also for the bottom line.

Any firm that is not seriously promoting exercise and fitness programs are basically costing themselves money, according to this study.

Not only will you be saving money on your insurance premiums, but you will get more output from your employees, as well.  Looks like a win-win.

New Study: Using a Pedometer Increases Fitness for Senior Citizens

the use of pedometer increases the amount of walking for senior citizens

Using a pedometer increases walking by seniors by an average of 50 minutes per week, according to a new study.

Austin, Texas:  According to a new report, using a pedometer might motivate sedentary older adults to fit more walking into their daily routines.

Researchers found that giving older adults a pedometer along with exercise advice seemed to work better than advice alone — at least as far as encouraging “leisure” walking.  That refers to things like walking to the store instead of driving.

After a year, participants in the pedometer group had increased their strictly leisure-time walking by 50 minutes a week, on average.

“Leisure walking is seen as a manageable form of physical activity for older adults, and hence should be more actively encouraged,” said Gregory S. Kolt, a professor at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, who led the study.

Any organization that caters to senior citizens should be giving a free pedometer to its members– whether it be a retirement community, fitness center, local coffee shop, wellness center or so on.

Imprinted pedometers wholesale for $2-$3 each for a good quality pedometer, as you can see at this link of imprinted pedometers from WellnessIncentivesPlus.com.

Not only will a branded pedometer keep your name in front of your senior customers for years, but it will help them improve their level of fitness by encouraging them to walk more often.

Pedometers are an easy way to track and measure steps, so it can encourage senior citizens to reach certain “step goals” each day.

If you are a retailer, offer an imprinted pedometer free with a  minimum purchase or as part of a loyalty reward (such as free after 4 purchases of coffee, etc).

Hand out free pedometers at health fairs, investment and insurance seminars and community wellness events.

Keep seniors more active by getting them moving more frequently.

Here’s to Healthier Seniors!

April is Stress Awareness Month. How Will You Celebrate this With Your Employees?

Help your employees reduce stressAustin, Texas.  Stress is a part of every day life and everybody deals with stress in their own way.

Some exercise.

Some eat.

Some smoke.

Some blow up.

Stress can wreak havoc in our lives if it is not dealt with properly.

Lack of sleep.

Increased hypertension.

Loss of productivity and concentration.

Greater fatigue.

Job related stress is a significant factor in wellness and employee performance.  Job stress is defined by NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health) as “the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker”.

Princeton Survey Research Associates says … problems at work are more strongly associated with health complaints than are any other life stress (more so than even financial problems or family problems). According to The Families & Work Institute, 25% view their jobs as the number one cause of stress in their lives.

Yale University said that 29% of those surveyed were “quite a bit or extremely stressed at work”.

A Northwestern National Life survey said that 40% of workers surveyed indicated their job is “very or extremely stressful”; 75% of employees believe the worker has more on-the-job stress than a generation ago.

The American Psychological Association reports that 62% of Americans are stressed out. The rest of us may be too stressed to realize it.

Now is the time to talk to your wellness clients and prospects because 1 in 4 Americans admits to having taken a “mental health day” in a given year. Stress reportedly costs employers $602 a year per employee. A whopping total of 275,000,000 working days a year are lost due to stress.

Employers can do something about stress.

In fact, we have hundreds of low cost promotional wellness and stress relieving items, from yoga mats and yoga related items, stress relief balls , stress coping guides and more at WellnessIncentivesPlus.com.

How Often Should Your Company Remind Their Employees of Their Wellness Program and Goals?

Too Many Companies Overlook the Importance of Consistent Positive Wellness Reminders

How often Should you remind your employees of your wellness program?Austin, Texas  One of the most frequent questions we get is about the frequency of wellness reminders. Basically, the main question is: How often should a company remind their employees of their program without becoming a nag?

I find this question funny, as the results are usually the opposite: not enough time or effort spent on reminders and too  much time spent on the nitty-gritty of the wellness program itself.

Let me clarify one thing: when I use the term “wellness reminder”, I am referring more to “positive reinforcement”–not a Big Brother atmosphere.

If reminders are done in a positive way, then reminders can be a daily basis–with posters, signs, mementos, etc. — all promoting the wellness program mission and positive reinforcement message.

The whole goal of the wellness program is to incentivize real change .. and real change doesn’t happen overnight.

Usually it takes 30 days to change a habit–be it smoking cessation a daily walk, no cream and sugar in the morning coffee cup, etc.

Attaboys, stickers, pats on the back– all these should be forthcoming every day on a regular basis.  I see to many programs where a manger sends off a memo– and points are rewarded for the wellness incentive program, backs are patted, high fives are given– then it stops! Just like that–until another edict is announced or memo sent.

Positive reinforcements should be given as a matter of fact.  People like to be recognized with acknowledgement.  It helps to promote this new positive behavior.

To modify that management technique praised in the 1980s: Praise by Walking Around!

Get off your duff and notice people doing things right.

Catch them in the act of positivity.

Don’t jump on the negatives–use them as a chance to remind that person of their goals.

Be consistent.

Be positive.  People put up with enough negativity all day long that an “Attaboy” goes a long way.  A lot further than you would imagine.

Make an impact on the lives and psyches of your employees .. and you will encourage and reinforce positive wellness behaviors.

Can you reinforce the wellness message too often?

Usually this happens only when these reminders tend to be insincere or are negative.

These should be behavior reinforcements– catching people doing things right.

Not every employee is going to be successful — no matter what the program is. Spend the most time on those that seem to want to make positive improvements.

Remember the 80-20 Rule. Try to get the 80% of your employees to make positive changes in their wellness and fitness goals.

Don’t forget the other 20%–but they may be sabotaging your program.

Not everyone will buy into the program–regardless of its appeal.

Positive reminders can still help with those employees as well.

Be a cheerleader.

Be a friend.

Be a fan.

Be an encourager.

Don’t be a nag.

Here’s to a healthier workplace.

Time to Run a Short Term Holiday Wellness Program: No Gain, Weight Maintenance Incentive

Time for a short term wellness Program for the HolidaysAustin, Texas: We all know that it is easier to maintain than to lose weight, so now would be the ideal time to motivate your employees to aim for maintenance during the upcoming Holiday season

If you are presently running a wellness program, this short-term program can be run ass an add-on or a separate contest. If you are still designing, discussing or contemplating your corporate wellness incentive program, here is a quick way to jump in.

Run a six-week campaign, with weigh-ins at the beginning at at the end of the program.  Give rewards to everyone that has maintained their weight for these six weeks.  Bonus points can be given for every pound lost, in addition.

This program will encourage your employees to think twice before eating or imbibing.  One less dessert here, one fewer drink there, smaller portions– and before you know it, your employees will be more cognizant of what they consume throughout the holidays.

Who is with me on this?

I’d love to hear from anyone who is running or planning a short-term weight maintenance program to hear how you are implementing it – and the results you have seen from prior campaigns.

Here’s to a healthier and fitter workforce!
